In 1991 Nepal opened the restricted areas to foreigners and the first group traveled to the Forbidden Kingdom of Upper Mustang in spring -92. In addition to Mustang, Dolpo in Western Nepal and Nupri north of Manaslu were also opened. A trek in a restricted area must be organized by a registered trekking agency and the group must be accompanied by a liaison officer.
