Everest Base Camp and Kala Pattar - Jiri The classic Everest Trek to the base of the world's highest mountain along the route used by the early expeditions. Phakding Kala Pattar Everest and Nuptse A trek to Kala Pattar and Everest Base Camp starting in Jiri after an eight hour drive from Kathmandu. The first week of the trek goes through the lower valleys between Jiri and Lukla (2800 m). This is the route used by the early expeditions to Everest and is a journey from the Hindu farming communities in the hills past the Sherpa Buddhist villages of the highlands before we reach the glacial wilderness of Everest Base Camp. The long approach will ensure that you will arrive well acclimatized in Namche Bazaar (3440 m). We spend a day exploring Namche Bazaar, the colorful Sherpa capital and the biggest of Nepal’s highland bazaars. After Namche we visit Khumbu’s most famous monastery in Tengboche (3867 m), idyllically set on alpine meadows below the beautiful Ama Dablam (6856 m) with Everest and Lhotse dominating the skyline to the north-east. From Thengboche we move on to the high pastures of Pheriche (4240 m) and Lobuche (4930 m). We climb Kala Pattar (5600 m) from Lobuche and stop in Gorak Shep (5160 m) on the way. The next day we visit Everest Base Camp. The return follows the same route back to Lukla for an exciting flight back to Kathmandu. This trek is highly recommended if you have the extra time.
