The vast treeless plain of Serengeti is home to several million animals. The annual wildebeest migration is the main attraction with up to two million animals on the move in search of fresh grasslands. The park covers almost 15 000 km2 and its northern part is adjacent to Masai Mara in Kenya. Serengeti is also famous for its lions, cheetah and herds of giraffe.

The Wildebeest migration

The wildebeest migration is the main attraction of the Serengeti. The Serengeti is one of the few places where you can imagine what the African plains must have been like a hundred years ago. Over two million animals are on the move in search of fresh grasslands. The animals spend the rainy season (March – April) widely scattered in the area around Ngorongoro in the southern part of the park. By March this area usually dries up and huge herds form and the animals start moving north towards Masai Mara in Kenya. The herds arrive Masai Mara around August – September and stays there until November when they move south again towards the Ngorongoro area. The calving starts with the normal time for the rainy season. If the rain is delayed a large percentage of the calves will die due to lack of food. The actual times of the migration will vary from year to year dependent on the weather patterns.
