Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaros huge snowcapped dome rises almost 5000 m above the surrounding plains and is one of Africa’s classic sights. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and one of the words highest volcano. The mountain has two peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi, with Uhuru Peak (5896 m) on Kibo as the highest point. The highest point on Mawenzi is Hans Meyer Point (5149 m) but cannot be reached without technical climbing. Thousands of trekker attempt Uhuru Peak every year and watching the sun rise over the crater is truly a magnificent experience. Reaching the summit is not easy as only about 10% makes it that far. About 50% reach Gillmans point (5680 m) on the crater rim above Kibo Hut while the rest call it a day somewhere between Kibo Hut and Gillmans.

EcoExpeditions offer any trek on Kilimanjaro but only the Marangu (Coca Cola), Umbwe and Machame routes are presented here.

Most people combine the Kilimanjaro climb with a safari and a trip to Zanzibar and this excellent itinerary can be done on two weeks.
