Health & Medicine

Before going on one of our trips you should make an appointment with your doctor and dentist for a check-up. Below we have prepared a rough guide for immunization you might need. This is only a basic guide - each person must follow the advice of their doctor.

Anti-malarial prophylactics

Check with your doctor about need for anti-malarial medication for the areas that you will be visiting.

Hepatitis (A).

Gamma globulin injection or Havrix which provides 10 years coverage.

Meningitis A+C.

Recommended for Nepal.

Polio

You might need an adult booster.

Tetanus.

An updated shot is recommended.

Typhoid.

Available in pill form.

Personal First Aid Kit

The trek leader will carry a comprehensive medical kit but it is still recommended that each person bring a small first aid kit. The kit should contain the items listed below in addition to any special medications you may need.

Antiseptic cream.
Sun-cream and lip screen.
Plasters, sports-tape or Second Skin.
Multi-vitamin tablets.
Glucose tablets.
Aspirin or Advil for headaches etc.
Iodine-based water purification tablets.
Re-hydration salts.
Anti-diarrhea tablets like Imodium.
Antibiotics. Please consult with your doctor.
Diamox (see below). Please consult your doctor.

For those of our trips that go to high altitudes (above 3000 m) you are at risk of developing AMS (acute mountain sickness). Controlled use of Diamox  can reduce some of the symptoms of AMS and it is recommend that you ask your doctor to provide you with a prescription for a small supply of Diamox (12 x 250mg tablets).
