Trekking Grade

Grade 1 - Easy

Suitable for most people in good health. Trekking on good paths at low altitudes. Short days.

Grade 2 - Moderate

For reasonably fit people. Trekking on paths or glaciers with the occasional hard day and short periods at high altitudes. Mainly short days.

Grade 3 - Demanding

Physically demanding. Trekking in difficult terrain with long periods at high altitudes. Some long days.

Grade 4 - Strenuous

Physically very demanding. Trekking in difficult terrain in very remote areas with long periods at extreme altitudes. Can include difficult pass crossings and glacier travel which requires use of ropes and basic mountaineering skills. Many long days.

Climbing Grade

Grade 1 - Moderate

Low angle snow slope with no objective danger. Requires use of crampons and ice-axe.

Grade 2 - Challenging

Steeper angle snow slope than grade 1 or crossing of crevassed sections of glacier. Requires use of crampons and ice-axe and ropes may be fixed on steeper sections.
